A Case of Hereditary Elliptocytosis

Abstract
Hereditary elliptocytosis is very rare disease in orientals and transmitted as an
autosomal dominant trait. Occasionally it brings severe hemolytic anemia.
The authors experienced one case of hereditary elliptocytosis characterized by
ellipto-cytes in peripheral blood smears and family history.
3 persons of her family revealed elliptocytes in peripheral blood smears. She had mild
anemia, but apparent hemolytic symptoms were not observed. Hepatoaplenomegaly was
not noted. Bone marrow aspiration smears disclosed slight erythroid hyperplasia.
Routine hematologic findings were normal, but osmotic fragility and reticulocytes are
increased. Splenectomy was not done because of no hemolytic symptom.
She was received transfusion and iron therapy.
The anthors report this case with review of literatures.
